Thomas Oliver Harding (January 5, 1850 – October 17, 1896) was born on January 5, 1850, in Watford, England, the son of the Reverend Thomas Harding, a Wesleyan minister. He received his early education at Kingswood Wesleyan School near Bath, followed by studies at King's College, London, and then at Trinity College, Cambridge.

At Cambridge, he excelled in mathematics. He won the senior mathematical minor scholarship, was elected to a foundation scholarship in 1871, and earned first-class prizes from 1870 to 1872. In 1873, he graduated as Senior Wrangler (the top mathematics student in the University of Cambridge for that year). He later received his MA in 1876.

Alongside his academic success, Harding was a keen oarsman and swimmer, served as President of the Cambridge Union, and was a member of the Trinity College Shakespeare Society.

Following his graduation, he worked as a schoolmaster at Marlborough College (and was noted in some sources to have also trained or worked as a barrister). He passed away on October 17, 1896, at the age of 46.

Harding was elected to the intellectual secret society, the Cambridge Apostles, in 1872 during his time as an undergraduate at Trinity College.

There is no historical documentation or mention in available records linking Thomas Oliver Harding directly to LGBTQ+ topics, personal identifiers, or specific relationships of that nature. While the Cambridge Apostles as a society historically counted several figures with diverse or non-conforming personal lives among its broader membership over the decades, specific records or context regarding any such orientation or links for Harding himself do not appear in mainstream biographical literature.
